Background of the Study

Electoral violence remains one of the most significant barriers to youth participation in politics, particularly in Nigeria. Youths, who represent a significant proportion of the population, are often both victims and perpetrators of electoral violence, driven by systemic poverty, unemployment, and political manipulation (Adebayo & Musa, 2023). In Zaria Local Government, Kaduna State, the fear of violence during elections has discouraged many young people from engaging in political activities, thereby limiting their potential contribution to democratic governance. While some youths are co-opted into violent acts by political actors, others withdraw entirely from the political space, perpetuating a cycle of exclusion and apathy (Garba & Bello, 2024). This study explores the relationship between electoral violence and youth participation in politics, with a focus on identifying strategies to enhance youth engagement in Zaria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Electoral violence in Zaria Local Government has had a profound impact on youth participation in politics, contributing to low engagement and disenfranchisement. The fear of violence during elections has created a hostile environment that discourages meaningful youth involvement (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). Despite the critical role of youth in nation-building, their limited participation in politics due to violence remains a significant challenge. This study seeks to investigate the factors linking electoral violence to youth apathy and explore solutions to foster greater youth political engagement in Zaria.
